We know that it's not always easy trying to work out which therapist we might like to work with: Because the decision isn't just about where they're located and when they're available, but there's a bit more of a human, relational element to the decision too.

So here at Shapes and Sounds, we want to help make that process just a little easier.

Every month, we'll be introducing a therapist from the Asian Australian Mental Health Practitioner List to help you gain a bit more insight into who you feel might be a good fit for you or someone that you know.

This month we're excited to connect you with Krishneeta who is a Provisional Psychologist offering services in New Farm, QLD and Telehealth Australia-wide. We hope you enjoy connecting with Krishneeta below!

1. What led you to choosing mental health as a career?

My entire life I knew I wanted to get into one of the helping professions but didn’t know what. I fell into becoming a pharmacist which
was good for me at the time and allowed me to “help” people but it was never fulfilling enough.

Mental health became an interest when I realised just how little I knew about it and the importance of nurturing and taking care of mental health just the same as our physical health. There were many reasons for this including the stigma that already exists within our society but also further to this the indian culture that I was raised to be a part of also hardly acknowledged this area of health.

In addition to this, I’ve always been drawn to understanding humans, their individual journeys and what has shaped them into becoming who they are. I love nurturing the growth in others and facilitating their development.

2. What is your unique cultural heritage?

My background is Fijian indian. That is, my great grandparents moved from India to the Fiji Islands many years ago and that is where I was born. I moved to Australia when I was 2 years old and was raised with values aligning across both cultures (Which often was not and still is not easy!).

3. What are your areas of specialty and what kind of frameworks do you work from?

I draw on a range of approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT and Mindfulness therapies. I have experience in working with complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, chronic suicidality and self-harm.

4. What kind of clients are you best able to support?

I am able to support all client groups including children however I am most passionate about working with underprivileged and vulnerable population groups such and immigrant and refugee clients as well as homeless individuals.

5. If you could be your own therapist right now, what do you think you would say to yourself?

Stay present. You got this, it will pass. Breathe.
