Meet Asian Australian Art Psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing Therapist, Simone Shu Yin Chan
Mar 03, 2025
We know that it's not always easy trying to work out which therapist we might like to work with: Because the decision isn't just about where they're located and when they're available, but there's a bit more of a human, relational element to the decision too.
So here at Shapes and Sounds, we want to help make that process just a little easier.
Every month, we'll be introducing a therapist from the Asian Australian Mental Health Practitioner List to help you gain a bit more insight into who you feel might be a good fit for you or someone that you know.
This month we're excited to connect you with Simone Shu Yin Chan who is a Art Psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing Therapist offering services in Sydney CBD, NSW and Telehealth Australia Wide. We hope you enjoy connecting with Simone below!
~
1. What led you to choosing mental health as a career?
I wanted to do something meaningful with my life, and also integrate my passions in art, and psychology. On hindsight, I was probably subconsciously also on my own healing journey as most of us who do this work, are.
2. What is your unique cultural heritage?
I am a Singaporean Chinese, born in Singapore and moved to Sydney, Australia in 2024.
3. What are your areas of specialty and what kind of frameworks do you work from?
I am an art psychotherapist, trained in the psychodynamic framework which looks at family of origin, attachment, and our subconscious, to learn how they impact us in the present moment. I am also a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and guide my clients to notice our mind-body connection as a resource for regulation and in trauma processing.
4. What kind of clients are you best able to support?
I support adolescents and adults, and have worked with many neurodivergent clients (Autistic and/or ADHDers) with low support needs. I have also worked with people with complex trauma, including domestic abuse, and people with strained family relationships.
5. If you could be your own therapist right now, what do you think you would say to yourself?
Do not compare your journey with others, as we each have our own paths to walk.
