We know that it's not always easy trying to work out which therapist we might like to work with: Because the decision isn't just about where they're located and when they're available, but there's a bit more of a human, relational element to the decision too.

So here at Shapes and Sounds, we want to help make that process just a little easier.

Every month, we'll be introducing a therapist from the Asian Australian Mental Health Practitioner List to help you gain a bit more insight into who you feel might be a good fit for you or someone that you know.

This month we're excited to connect you with Ronald who is a Marriage & Family Therapist offering services in Eastwood, NSW, and Telehealth Australia-wide. We hope you enjoy connecting with Ronald below!

1. What led you to choosing mental health as a career?

Growing up I struggled to make any kind of meaningful relationship. I couldn’t connect with others, I struggled to communicate, building trust felt impossible. It wasn’t until I was 18 years old where I finally made my first real connection. For the first time in my life, I felt seen. From that one experience, I learnt that relationships aren’t just an important thing, they’re everything. And that the quality of our relationships shapes the quality of our lives. And it was this experience that planted the seeds for my career. Now I work to support others to experience the same in their own relationships — to have meaningful, connected and authentic relationships with their loved ones.

2. What is your unique cultural heritage?

My family migrated from Vietnam and I was born in Australia.

3. What are your areas of specialty and what kind of frameworks do you work from?

I specialise in couples therapy, healing from infidelity and family therapy with adult family members.

I utilise an attachment framework whilst integrating interventions and various approaches, tailoring my approach to my clients. I believe that good and effective therapy is wholistic - integrating the cognitive, emotional, and experiential in order to promote lasting change.

4. What kind of clients are you best able to support?

I work with individuals, couples and families to create meaningful, connected and authentic relationships by supporting them with communication, conflict management, connection and building trust.

5. If you could be your own therapist right now, what do you think you would say to yourself?

Be kind and compassionate to yourself. Compassion is recognising and accepting our shared humanity, so we treat ourselves and others with loving kindness, in beauty and in pain.
